How NAET / BioSET Saved My Life - by Debra Gaffney C.C.P.A., A.P. While I was studying at the Acupuncture College, a classmate asked me to treat her. She said that she would hold a vial of a medicine that made her sick and I would insert needles in specific places. After that treatment she needed to be away from the substance for 24 hours but after that she would no longer be allergic to the medicine and it would work better for her. Well, of course, I thought she was crazy! I did the treatment to humor her. Two days later, she said that she could take the medicine without any side effects. The same week Dr. Gaffney had a patient approach him with the same request. This patient had a book describing the treatment for allergies. Doc shared the experience with me and we read the book that night. The next day I asked Doc to treat me for MSG. MSG was an additive that I avoided at all costs. It was not easy going to an Oriental Medicine school and not eating Chinese food! I also had trouble with convenience foods, local restaurants and frozen foods. Eating out was difficult, at best, and could be traumatic at times. I would eat at the same restaurants and order the same foods after an apprehensive first try. My reactions (which I won't go into detail here) were horrible. In fact, the last time I had MSG (under a different name in vegetarian sausage), I could have died if Doc hadn't been there. So, I bought pure MSG and Doc treated me for it. For some reason, I took the chance because I really didn't think it would work. 48 hours later, I went to a Chinese restaurant 20 minutes away from my house. I took my girlfriend in case something went wrong. She said that she would call 911 if I blinked crooked! I ate everything - soup, egg rolls, dark gravy, hot spices and the dessert. Nothing happened at all, no numbness, dizziness or anything. At this same time, Doc had a blood test to identify allergies. His joints were very painful and at the end of the day, his feet would be purple and so very painful and hot. His blood test showed that he was allergic to 25 items out of 50. He started doing the elimination and rotation diet. The next week, we went to an internal disorders conference. At least five doctors came up to us and asked if we had heard of NAET. They all said it changed their lives, their families and patients. At the end of the weekend Doc convinced me to attend the classes. I was still very skeptical but signed up. The next available class was two months away. During this time, I treated Doc for some of the foods his blood test rated as high. He started to improve. One day, I treated him for wheat and after my lunch I kissed him. We noticed that instantly his stomach started to swell. That night he said that he felt like he had meningitis, every joint in his body hurt. I went to my first class in October. It looked like a cross between a Mary Kay convention and a revival. I have never seen such excitement among professionals. The stories I heard were fantastic. People pushed people out of the way to get to her books and to the vials. There was standing room only, for three days! Dr. Cutler was using muscle testing to check people for problems. I have a problem with muscle testing because it can be subjective, you can only test for a few items and it's hard on both parties. Dr. Cutler then showed us the computerized equipment and program. Now, I've never liked computers and vice versa, but this showed me a way to test and treat a lot more. And, I wanted to help as many people as was effectively possible. I felt and still feel that everyone has the right to live a full life and not be held hostage by food, drink and things we touch. So, I bought the program and started treating Doc, other family and friends and Doc treated me. We compared the blood test list and saw that the items we had treated Doc for were gone and the ones we hadn't treated him for were still there. It snowballed from there. I've treated over 3000 people to date with better than 85% success rate. Everyday I thank God and Dr. Nambudripad and Dr. Cutler! The History of this Treatment Procedure Dr. Devi Nambudripad, a chiropractor and acupuncturist in California of Indian descent, discovered quite by accident a technique that helped her dramatically with her own extensive health problems. She found that her symptoms of joint pain, bronchitis and pneumonia, depression, and migraine headaches could only be controlled when she ate nothing but white rice and broccoli. Anything else in her diet produced a return of some or all of her symptoms. One day, while waiting for her rice to cook, she absent-mindedly chewed on some carrots. In minutes she felt like she was going to pass out, and realized that she was experiencing a sensitivity reaction to carrots. She called her husband, who was also an acupuncturist, and he suggested that she treat herself with acupuncture. She did and proceeded to go to sleep for 45 minutes. When she awoke she felt much better, with more energy and clearer thinking. She noticed that some pieces of carrots were still stuck in her hand. She dropped them immediately. She wondered if there was a connection between accidentally holding the carrots while being treated and waking up feeling so well. The next day she again ate some carrots, this time with no reaction at all. She began to experiment. When she treated herself for other foods that had previously given her a reaction, those sensitivities disappeared as well. After much experimentation on herself and her patients she began to teach this method to others. Among her early students was Dr. Ellen Cutler, also from California. Dr. Cutler had great success with this method, which was now called the NAET Technique after Nambudripad Allergy Elimination Technique. Dr. Cutler became very efficient at the technique and began to teach it also. Originally, and even today, the commonly utilized method for finding sensitivities was by skin testing, blood testing, or provocation and challenge with the substance. Most physicians, including my husband Dr. Gaffney, formerly handled sensitivities in this way for years. Unfortunately, the only thing that could be done once the sensitivity was discovered by these methods was to tell the patient to avoid the sensitivity (an often impossible task) or try to treat it with long-term therapy with minute doses, usually by injection, of the sensitivity substance itself. Many have tried this expensive, invasive method with less than optimum success. Some physicians, including Dr. Namudripad and Dr. Cutler, initially used muscle testing to help identify the sensitivities. Eventually, Dr. Cutler discovered that the sensitivities could be uncovered with a computerized device that measured skin resistance to a very small direct electrical current applied to specific acupuncture points. Dr. Cutler also found that sometimes it was necessary to first address a patient’s digestion problems that started or contributed to their sensitivity with effective digestive enzymes and other healing natural substances. This often speeds up the process of treating sensitivities. She called her approach the “BioSET Technique.” These procedures are ever evolving, dynamic techniques that are becoming more effective with experience and clinical insight. There are now more than 1,000 practitioners of all disciplines using this technique. Helpful web sites: Dr. Cutler www.BioSET.NET
